The questions,
answered plainly

What a mosaic portrait is made of, how long it takes, which size for which wall, which photo to send and how to hang the panel when it comes. Written at the bench, from what we actually do.

The Tesera bench: trays of blue, ochre, rust and cream tesserae around a half-set terrier portrait, the maker placing a piece with tweezers, a hammer and hardie beside it
Materials

What is a mosaic portrait made of?

Glass smalti and glazed ceramic tesserae, 8–14 mm, set in lime mortar on sealed birch, then grouted and waxed. No print, no resin, no vinyl.

Process

How is a mosaic portrait made, step by step?

From your photo to a signed panel: the design, the cartoon, the cutting, the setting in lime mortar, the grout, the wax and the crate. Every step, in order.

Gifting

How do you give a mosaic portrait as a gift?

Two weeks to make, then the post. Which photo to borrow, what to put in the name field, how the crate arrives, and what to do when the date is already close.
